“…in the breakdown of the bicameral mind” by Julian Jaynes [1979]
Another formative book. I’m sort of happy to see it’s developed a kind of fan base. Before the internet I looked in vain for reviews or discussion of it. It rocked my world philosophically, but didn’t seem to make much impact on the rest of the intellectual universe. So for a long time I just thought “I’ve been had by another crackpot or Castaneda-like trickster.”
