Thank goodness for the IFC channel. Once in a while (actually, often) they broadcast some real gem of obscure cinema. Onibaba is one of them.
You can read about the details at imdb.com. Basically this is an extremely atmospheric, intense film which has a small cast of characters (basically three people — and their victims) and is set in an indefinite field of bamboo and rushes by a river.
The other thing I found out (I guess I should do more research) is that Criterion has one of their beautiful productions of this film:
